θ (2014)

mixed media with electronics

In θ, rotating motors create a rhythm that suggests the cyclical passage of time, which is echoed by the 7-segment display embedded in the table. This connection between circular conceptions of time and digital processing references the notion of infinity, which exists beyond human efforts to categorize and label. Similarly, the display of “raw” materials alongside assembled forms conveys a sense of processing, which refers back to the notion of the experiment. As well, the idea of cataloguing information is conveyed through the careful arrangement of items and heightened by the linear geometry of the work. A sense of absurdity pervades the piece, as the complex processes seem to lead in many directions but ultimately arrive nowhere.
